We’ve all heard about and most likely suffered from split ends. They are annoying and can mean the difference between a polished and an unpolished hairstyle. But what causes split ends? How can we get rid of them? And most importantly, how do we prevent them? Healthy hair is the secret to a perfect hairstyle and a flawless look, so Barcelona Hair Academy wants to give you some advice on how keep your hair healthy and split-end free.

Split ends are a sign that our hair is not receiving enough nutrients, and as a result, it becomes brittle and dry. Some of the things that can cause this are the use of hot styling tools and regular blow drying, chemical treatments such bleaching, dying and perms, harsh techniques for detangling hair, hair products that contain drying agents and finally, lack of regular trims.

Unfortunately, we can’t cure split ends once they happen. The only way to get rid of it them is to cut the hair. If we don’t, the hair will just continue breaking higher along the hair shaft, causing the hair to look frizzy, dry and unmanageable. Hair products may help to conceal them temporarily, however, only routine maintenance such as small trims every 6/8 weeks will keep your hair healthy, strong and split-end free.

Although there isn’t a magic way to avoid split ends entirely, there are some things we can do to minimize them. It’s very important to keep your hair nourished and moisturized and always use heat protectors before using hot styling tools as well as sulfate and alcohol free hair products. Towel dry your hair gently without twisting or wringing and be very patient and gentle when detangling it. Use deep conditioning masks every two weeks to keep your hair moisturized and, very importantly, have regular trims.
